EXCHANGE OF THE DRIVING LICENSE OF COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, ICELAND, LIECHTENSTEIN AND NORWAY
Valid permits to drive in Spain are those permits issued in countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). And also include nationals of other countries that are issued in accordance with Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention, which includes Switzerland.
If you exchange your residence to another EU country, it is normal that you do not have to exchange your permit. You can use your current permission while it is valid.
If you wish, you can voluntarily exchange your permit for another equivalent in your new country of residence.
You will have to prove that you reside in that country and that you meet the requirements (minimum age, psychophysical skills, etc.). We will guide you through the process to ensure you are compliant.
Before exchanging your permit, the administration will contact you in your previous country of residence to verify that it is not a restricted, suspended or withdrawn permit.
Third Countries.- The validity of permits issued in third countries is conditional upon the expiration of a maximum period of six months, counted from the time the holder acquires his normal residence in Spain, duly accredited in accordance with the provisions of Organic Law 4 / 2000, of January 11, on the rights and freedoms of foreigners in Spain and their social integration, except that, in the case of the permits recognized in particular multilateral and bilateral international agreements in which Spain is a party and in the conditions that are in them indicate, another norm has been established in the corresponding agreement.
REQUIREMENTS TO EXCHANGE YOUR DRIVING LICENSE
You will need to be a Spanish resident in order to apply to exchange your driving license.
- APPLICATION in official form and TALON FOTO available at Traffic Headquarters complete.
- ACCREDITATION OF IDENTITY AND RESIDENCE: Document of Identity of your country or Passport together with the Certificate of Registration in the Central Registry of Foreigners for community foreigners.
- DRIVING LICENSE: original in force and photocopy.
- A RECENT PHOTOGRAPH of 32×26 mm.
- PAYMENT OF THE RATE.
The documentation can be presented by the permit holder or by a representative, for which an authorization from the interested party must be signed to carry out the procedure.
