THE VOTING RIGHT OF BRITISH RESIDENTS IN SPAIN
Madrid and London sign an agreement to vote their residents abroad in local elections
The Brexit will not affect the voting rights of British residents in Spain or those of Spaniards settled in the United Kingdom. The Government wants that the bilateral pact is applied already in the municipal ones of the 26 of May of 2019.
The agreement provide that these citizens can both vote in municipal elections, and also run as candidates. While there are no official figures to draw on, British sources estimate that there are several dozen Britons holding such roles in Spanish local councils.
In order to exercise these rights, Spain will require that British citizens have lived in the country for at least three years (in the case of future elections, not in 2019), and that they are registered on the Electoral Census of Foreigners Resident in Spain by January 30.
We advise all Britons who have not yet applied for residency to do so before March 30 to be able to enjoy many rights acquired as EU citizens.
